Velopharyngeal Inadequacy (VPI) can contribute to severe unintelligibility for a child. The presenter will review anatomy and the formation of the glottal stop as a maladaptive place of articulation. The speaker will outline a treatment hierarchy and suggest therapeutic techniques targeting eliminating the error place and promoting appropriate articulation.
Learning Objectives:
At the end of the presentation, the participant will demonstrate these learning objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify the qualities of resonance and air-pressure build-up for specific phonemes that are frequently in error of place related to VPI
- Participants will be able to describe treatment objectives focusing on resonant placement for low-pressure speech sounds and oral place of airflow for plosive and continuant speech sounds
- Participants will be able to recognize consonant and vowels in non-complex word shapes as well as sound sequences that facilitate accurate practice of appropriately placed speech sounds
